Les temples égyptiens et leurs clergés, loin de fonctionner comme des entités isolées, faisaient l'objet de nombreux points de contact entre les dieux, comme entre les hommes. Toutefois, bien que ces échanges soient avérés et témoignent d'une certaine universalisation de la religion égyptienne au niveau du pays, chaque clergé local avait à cœur de transformer ces emprunts pour les adapter aux particularités de son panthéon et de ses sanctuaires. De fait, il est souvent difficile de retracer avec certitude l'origine exacte de telle ou telle influence, de postuler l'existence d'un texte source (Urtext) ou encore de définir quelle est la part de "norme" et la part d'adaptation dans chaque tradition. L'objectif du présent ouvrage est donc de contribuer à une meilleure compréhension de ces relations et des pratiques rituelles qui les sous-tendent, afin de mettre en valeur les modalités de fonctionnement de la religion égyptienne tardive, au cœur d'un double mouvement, d'apparence contradictoire, de standardisation d'une part et de singularisation locale d'autre part. Far from being isolated units, ancient Egyptian temples were places of numerous points of contact among deities and among men. While these links are well known and tend to show a measure of universality in Egyptian religion throughout the country, each local clergy was intent on modifying this common background to adapt it to the specificity of its own pantheon and sanctuaries. Indeed, it is often difficult to determine with any certainty the precise origin of this or that influence, to postulate the existence of an original source (Urtext), or even to distinguish in each tradition which part proceeds from the "norm" and which is the product of an adaptation. The aim of this book is to contribute to a better understanding of such relationships as well as of the underlying ritual practices in order to highlight the workings of Egyptian religion in the later periods--torn as they are between two apparently contradictory movements: standardization on the one hand and local singularization on the other.

Le site monastique de Baouît en Moyenne Égypte fait l’objet depuis 2003 de fouilles archéologiques, menées conjointement par l’Ifao et le musée du Louvre. S’étendant de la période byzantine ayant précédé la Conquête aux premiers siècles de l’époque arabe, il sert plus largement de référence dans la région du Bassin méditerranéen. Des journées d’étude organisées en juin 2018 ont été l’occasion de faire le point sur l’activité archéologique récente in situ et sur la recherche foisonnante suscitée auprès des chercheurs et universitaires au plan international. La publication des actes en deux parties, archéologie et textes, met en regard les premiers résultats des campagnes de terrain sur une décennie et les travaux actuels menés en parallèle dans le champ papyrologique à travers de nombreuses collections. Les dix-sept articles réunis dans ce volume présentent les résultats de recherches récentes et inédites, traitées par différents spécialistes qui, le plus souvent, publient séparément ; l’originalité de cet ouvrage est de les réunir dans une approche pluridisciplinaire, permettant aussi de nourrir une réflexion méthodologique sur l’apport et, parfois, les limites de la combinaison des sources. The monastic site of Baouit in Middle Egypt has been the target of archaeological excavations since 2003, conducted jointly by the IFAO and the Louvre. With activity extending from the Byzantine period preceding the Arab conquest to the first centuries of the Arab period, the site serves more broadly as a reference for the Mediterranean basin region. The conference organized in June, 2018, provided an opportunity to present recent archaeological work in situ along with the abundant papyrological research being carried out by scholars and academics at the international level. The publication of the proceedings in two parts, archaeology and texts, compares the first results of the field campaigns over a decade and the current papyrological work carried out in parallel in numerous collections. The seventeen articles gathered in this volume present the results of recent hitherto unpublished research, treated by different specialists who more often than not publish separately. The originality of this work is to bring them together in a multidisciplinary approach, which also makes it possible to deepen methodological reflection on the benefits and sometimes the limits of combining sources.
